Melita FC have condemned the racist comments passed on by a Swieqi United representative during Saturday’s BOV Challenge League clash at the Centenary Stadium.
The two neighbouring clubs faced off in the opening match of the season, with Swieqi coming out on top 2-1.
In a statement issued yesterday, Melita FC said that it deplored comments of a racial nature passed on by a Swieqi United representative from the ground’s VIP area towards a Melita player.
“Melita FC strongly deplores the racist comments made by a Swieqi representative in the VIP area against one of our players during yesterday’s match which was heard by many in the area and by many players on the pitch. Such behaviour has no place in football, in sport, or in society,” the club said in a statement.
“We sincerely thank the MFA staff who intervened to stop the individual responsible.
“However, we believe that swifter and more decisive action is necessary, including by the authorities present at the ground, whose role is precisely to prevent and address such unacceptable incidents.
“Melita FC stands firmly with our player and with all those who may be targets of discrimination.
“We will continue to work with the MFA, clubs, and the wider football community to ensure that respect, inclusivity, and fair play remain at the heart of the game.”
