Pellegrini sets season-fastest Maltese time in 100m

Pembroke Athleta sprinter Graham Pellegrini produced the standout performance at the fifth Athletics Malta Challenge Meeting of the season after clocking 10.69s in the 100m, establishing the fastest Maltese time over the distance this year.

Pellegrini later completed a sprint double by also winning the 200m in 21.77s, narrowly ahead of Savio College’s Jordan Pace, who finished just two hundredths of a second behind in a closely contested race.

In the women’s sprint events, Claire Azzopardi once again came out on top in her duel with Rush’s AC Thea Parnis Coleiro.

Azzopardi won the wind-assisted 100m in 11.62s ahead of Parnis Coleiro’s 11.80s, before repeating the same finishing order in the 200m with a winning time of 23.89s compared to Parnis Coleiro’s 24.24s.

The meeting also featured a number of strong performances from Malta’s younger athletes.

Thomas Neil Attard registered a new Under 16 national best in the 100m hurdles (15.17s), continuing a series of encouraging results in the youth categories.

Another Under 16 national best was achieved by La Salle’s Matteo Gauci in the 800m. Gauci clocked 1:59.88 to finish second behind teammate Julian Zarb, who won the race in 1:55.60.

Meanwhile, young throwers continued to impress, with Sophia Curmi recording a strong mark of 53.36m in the hammer using a 3kg weight, while Kareem Luca Chouhal registered a strong 51.65m, using a 7.26kg weighted hammer.

Despite the unfavourable wind conditions for the longer races, Isaac Bonnici had another good run in the 400m (49.19) and Julian Zarb in the 800m (1:55.60).

Attention now shifts to one of the major events on the Athletics Malta calendar, with the Youth National Athletics Championships set to take place next weekend at the Marsa Stadium.

The championships will see athletes competing for national honours in their respective categories, while several will also aim to achieve qualification standards for international events taking place later this summer.
