Malta women water polo finish tenth at World Cup Division II

The Malta water polo women’s national team were beaten by Germany 19-9 to finish in tenth place at the World Cup Division II.

Despite Sunday’s defeat, it was a remarkable result for Aurelien Cousin’s girl, who put on a very positive showing in the prestigious tournament as they ended the campaign with three wins to their name.

Germany turned out to be superior opponents on Sunday as they were on top right from the outset, with the Maltese girls trying to put on a strong fight but in the end it was not enough.

Elena Borg was again Malta’s leading scorer with four goals.

The Germans were on the charge right from the opening session but the Maltes put on a strong fight as both sides shared four goals midway through with the hosts’ goals coming from two penalty conversions by Elena Borg.

Germany netted three goals without reply in the final part of the first session, with Eyla Schembri bridging the gap to 5-3.

The Germans dominated the second session as they found the net four times to take control of the match.

Malta struck just once through Chloe Amato to trail 9-4 at the interval.

The third session turned out to be a goal fest with the Germans scoring five times against Malta’s four.

Jensine Bugelli found the net twice, with the other goals coming from Elena Borg and Kendra Navarro as the Germans headed into the final session 14-8.

The game was all but settled now and in the final quarter the Germans still rubberstamped their authority when scoring five times with Malta finding the net once through Elena Borg.
