The Maltese National Archery Team recently competed at the 10th edition of the prestigious Veronica’s Cup international world ranking event held in Kamnik, Slovenia between May 28 and 31.
The event attracted 390 competitors from 30 countries and 63 clubs, including some of the world’s top archers.
This created a highly competitive environment and a valuable opportunity for Maltese athletes to test themselves against elite, international opposition.
Competing in the Compound Men’s category, the Maltese archers delivered determined performances throughout both the qualification and elimination stages.
In the Qualification round, Daniel Schembri secured 45th place with 667 points, Jeremy Bartolo finished 52nd with 650 points, whilst Brian Micallef placed 54th with 644 points.
In the Compound Women’s category, Maria Bugeja placed 28th during the Qualification round with 639 points.
Following the qualification phase, all our athletes progressed to the second stage of the individual head-to-head matches, where they demonstrated resilience and composure against strong competitors.
After the second stage matches, Jeremy Bartolo finished in 33rd position, with Brian Micallef and Daniel Schembri respectively in 49th and 51st position.
Maria Bugeja finished in 27th position after the individual matches.
In the Mixed Compound team event, Schembri and Bugeja came up against a very strong Italian team, who eventually won the gold medal and finished in 14th place overall.
In the Compound Men Team event, Daniel Schembri, Jeremy Bartolo, and Brian Micallef combined their scores to qualify in 10th place with 1,961 points and eventually maintained the same position against the Hungarian team amongst a strong field of international teams.
Accompanying the national squad was Head Coach John Schembri, whose guidance and support contributed significantly to the athletes’ preparations and performances throughout the tournament.
In a statement, the Archery Association of Malta said that the Veronica’s Cup competition is widely recognised as one of the most respected World Ranking events on the international archery calendar.
“Competing against experienced archers from across the globe presented a formidable challenge, yet the Maltese team demonstrated determination, professionalism, and a continually improving standard of performance,” the association said.
“These results reflect the ongoing development of archery in Malta and highlight the growing maturity and competitiveness of the Archery Association of Malta on the international stage.
“As the team continues to gain valuable experience at world-ranking events, Maltese archery remains firmly on a positive trajectory, building towards even greater achievements in future international competitions.”
