The European Week of Sport 2020 came to an end last night with the third edition of the Be Active Night at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

#BeActive Night is a European wide initiative that encourages countries to host a night time event during European Week of Sport.  The events are run in parallel across all of Europe and celebrate being active together.

For SportMalta this was a first since the event was filmed and transmitted on the national broadcaster TVM.

16 personalities coming from the fitness and TV sector were challenged over seven different disciplines against time.

Participants included basketball players Christina Grima and Monique Caruana, TV personalities Clare Agius Ordway and Stephanie Cauchi,  former athlete Gianella Bugeja, waterpolo player Stephanie Tanti Dejardins and fitness instructors Denise Gafa and Leanne Bartolo  in the female category.

In the male section, former football player Julian Briffa, Kyle Micallef, weightlifter in Rio Olympics, fitness instructors Marlon Borg, Ivan Gauci, Zak Farrugia and Daryl Psaila together win athlete Ryan Farrugia were the challengers.

The winner being the fastest the participants had to do one kilometre of cycling, moving a 100kg tyre and a 25kg sandbag for ten metres, sets of burpees and push ups, monkey bars and a 500m rowing. This challenge became more complicated due to rain throughout the event.

The tough challenge was concluded by all participants who all commented on the excellent organisation by SportMalta and the tough course.

Christina Grima and Kylie Micallef proved to be the fastest in the male and female category.

Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Clifton Grima praised SportMalta for the excellent work done throughout the week.

Chairman of SportMalta Luciano Busuttil commented on the excellent activities organised throughout the whole week.

CEO Mark Cutajar thanked all SportMalta Staff, coordinators of events RoseMarie Mercieca and her team, the producer of the event Alex Spiteri and PBS for their participation and involvement during the night
