Luxol St Andrew’s confirmed their status as the top team in Maltese Futsal after retaining the Enemed League title in a very exciting final series against University of Malta.
Buoyed by their 4-1 win in Game One of the series earlier in the week, Luxol were aware that victory on Friday would assure themselves of retaining the title for another season.
And the Luxol side got the job done as they beat the University side 4-3 in extra-time to secure their sixth successive national title.
The University side were a different proposition to the team that was outplayed in the first game earlier this week as they produced a gritty display to force extra-time with a last-gasp equaliser.
The first half turned out to be a balanced affair with Raimundo Nonato putting the University side ahead but Luxol tied the match just before the break through Luke Gatt.
Mark Zammit put Luxol in front after the break and when it looked as though they were set to kickstart their title party, the University of Malta sent the match into extra time when Steven Camilleri’s shot was deflected into his own net by Emil Raducu.
The Luxol side regrouped in extra-time and regained control of the match with goals from Andre Ciancio and Maicon.
Ninety seconds before the end of the match, Nonato pulled one back for University but that was too little too late as Luxol held on to the win.
At the end of the match, Futsal Malta president Mark Borg presented the trophy and medals to the Luxol St Andrews’ players and officials as their title celebrations were under way.
