The Maltese football community is mourning the passing of Żurrieq FC team manager Paul Bonnici who suddenly died on Wednesday.
Bonnici had been working at Żurrieq FC and became a key figure for the club and the players with his passion and dedication.
President Dino Bonnici said that his club were in deep shock following the passing of Bonnici.
“Our football club is deeply shocked by the loss of one of us – Pawlu Bonnici,” Bonnici said.
“Pawlu used to occupy the role of team manager – but in reality he used to do much more than that.
“Paul had a great passion and love for our club. His presence for every senior team game was one of commitment and dedication. The Żurrieq FC team was very precious for him in the same way his was fond of his mother Margaret. Our thoughts are with his mother Margaret and his father Ray in this difficult time.”
The Żurrieq FC president said that Bonnici’s death came at a time when he was working hard to transform the team into a more competitive side for next season.
“For Żurrieq FC, Paul used to do everything – he even was ready to take a step back for the the good of the club. And that was a huge sacrifice for Paul as he loved Żurrieq FC immensely.
“His death shocked us at it came at a time when Paul was working hard to ensure our team would be more competitive next season. I would like to thank him for his work, and I am sure we will be much stronger next season thanks to Paul’s contribution.
“I am not writing on what it was and what Paul did, but for what he was doing for the present and future of the club as he will remain alive with us forever.
“We will continue on his work as he passed through a lot of passion and determination for our club.
“In the name of all my colleagues at Żurrieq FC, I promise you that we will do all we can to reach all the highest objectives you wanted to reach so we can honour you in the way you deserve.
“I would like to thank you publicly for all you done for our club and for what we will continue to do.”
