The Futsal Malta Association (FMA) has welcomed the decision by the Malta Football Association to incorporate a new Futsal Arena within the National Stadium Regeneration Masterplan, bringing to fruition a long and determined movement that began in 2012 to secure dedicated infrastructure for futsal in Malta.
In a statement, the local governing body of futsal said that since its establishment in 2011, the FMA has worked consistently with the authorities and the MFA to address the lack of suitable facilities, as the limited indoor courts available were largely occupied.
“Initial discussions on dedicated infrastructure began many years ago with previous administrations, and over time, several concrete proposals were presented, including detailed plans with design concepts and cost estimates,” the statement said.
“Although these initiatives were not realised due to various challenges, the FMA’s commitment and persistence never wavered.
“These sustained efforts led to both major political parties, including the commitment to build a futsal arena in their 2022 electoral manifestos.
“Today, through the MFA’s vision to regenerate the National Stadium, a tangible opportunity has emerged to integrate a futsal venue within the new stadium complex, strengthening synergy between football and futsal.
“The National Stadium Regeneration Committee, led by MFA Vice President Dr Matthew Paris, has presented a clear brief that includes the Futsal Arena as one of its key deliverables.
“Mark Borg, president of the FMA, also forms part of this committee and the masterplanning and design team working to turn this long-standing vision into reality.”
