Maltese water polo women’s champions Sirens were off to a winning start in the European Aquatics Challenger Cup Classification Matches when they defeated London Otters 16-9 at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
The St Paul’s Bay side are bidding to finish as high as possible in the 5th-8th place play-offs, and they got their campaign to a fine start with a strong showing.
Sirens took control right from the opening session when they surged into a 5-2 lead with their goals coming from Samantha Rezende Ferreira, Kaia Agius (2), Martha Perici Ferrante and Elisa Amato.
In the second session, the English side tried to fight back, but Sirens held firm as the two teams shared six goals.
Chloe Amato and Perici Ferrante were quickly off the mark for Sirens with Rezende Ferreira adding another as the Maltese side changed ends 8-5 ahead.
In the third session, Sirens stepped up a gear as they outplayed their opponents, scoring five times through Rezende Ferreira hat-trick, Kaia Agius and Nevise Agius to stretch their lead to 13-7.
The fourth and final quarter saw Sirens administer their advantage, adding three further goals through Kaia Agius, Rezende Ferreira and Chloe Amato to seal their win.
