Sirens ASC women secure historic fifth placing in the European Aquatics Challenger Cup

Malta water polo champions Sirens ASC managed an historic fifth placing in the European Aquatics Challenger Cup after completing a clean sweep of victories in the positional play-offs of the continental competition.

The St Paul’s Bay side completed their commitments in style when they made it three wins out of three on Sunday when they overcame local rivals San Ġiljan 16-4 at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

Sirens proved too strong for San Ġiljan on Sunday and they all but assured themselves of victory by the end of the second session, when they had already built a commanding 11-1 lead.

And from then on, Sirens just administered their lead till the end to secure the best placing for a Maltese female team in a continental competition.

Sirens were off to a fast start when goals from Kaia Agius, Martha Perici Ferrante (2) and Chloe Amato put them 4-0 up.

In the second session, Sirens’ pressure remained relentless as they scored seven times through Kendra Navarro (2), Kaia Agius (2), Samantha Rezende Ferreira and Perici Ferrante (2) with San Ġiljan finally opening their scoring account through Marie Rose Tully.

Sirens remained on top even in the third session as they added three further goals through a Kaia Agius brace and another goal from Zaira Bartolo.

San Ġiljan netted their second goal of the match through Elena Borg.

The final session was evenly poised with the two sides sharing four goals.

Perici Ferrante and Amato were the scorers for Sirens while San Ġiljan responded through Borg and Thea Abdilla.
