Malta fight back to claim historic win against Scotland in Futsal World Cup qualifications

Maltese selection wrapped up qualifications with first-ever World Cup qualifying victory after losing the opening two matches in Denmark.

Malta produced a spirited performance to secure a dramatic 4–3 victory over Scotland, with a last-second winner capping a thrilling contest in its final 2028 FIFA World Cup qualifications.

The win marked Malta’s first-ever victory in this competition. It comes after defeats to Denmark (5-1) and Andorra (5-0) as the Maltese selection finished third and failed to advance to the Main Round of this edition.

The match began poorly for Malta when Marrwan Telisi turned the ball into his own net in the 11th minute. But the response was immediate – Nathan Cope quickly equalised to settle the team and shift momentum.

Scotland regained the lead through Kai Lawless midway through the half, only for Malta to hit back again, this time via Celino Alves. The sides went into the break level at 2-2 after an open and entertaining first half.

The pattern continued after the restart. Chris Angus restored Scotland’s advantage at 3-2, putting Malta under pressure heading into the closing stages. Still, Malta refused to give in.

Telisi redeemed his earlier mistake with a crucial equaliser late on, making it 3-3 and setting up a tense finish. Just when a draw seemed certain, Maikinho struck a dramatic last-gasp winner to seal a memorable comeback.

Goalkeeper Marmara also played a key role, making several important saves to keep Malta in the game during periods of heavy Scottish pressure.
