The Mediterranean Bowling Championships started with a bang for Malta as teenagers Kayden Lagana’ and Nicholas Muscat won gold and silver respectively in the singles event in Rome.
Both Lagana’ and Muscat started reasonably well after three games, with both being in the top 10 at that stage.
Lagana then found his form as games of 232 and 236 pushed him up to first place, just three pins ahead of Greek bowler Nikolaos Serelis, with one game left.
At this stage, Muscat was still in 11th place, 70 pins away from third place.
With Lagana’s shooting consistently, his 201 was more than enough to distance the Greek player whose 170 pins in the last game meant that Muscat had a chance for a medal with a big score in the last game.
And that is what he delivered as Muscat reeled off strike after strike to finish with a score of 258, 33 pins behind Lagana’ and three pins ahead of Serelis.
Tomorrow, Lagana and Muscat will be again in action in the doubles competition.
