The Malta Bowling national team struck gold at the Mediterranean Bowling Championships.
The Maltese selection, formed by Mauro Anastasi, Cynthia Frendo Duca, Sue Abela, and Nicholas Muscat, produced a very impressive performance to finish ahead of much larger countries such as Italy, Spain, and Turkey to win the gold medal in Ankara, Turkey.
The Maltese team ended the first set of three games in the morning session in first place, just ahead of Cyprus, Italy, and Turkey.
The start of the second set saw Italy come out with a strong 813 to overtake both Malta and Cyprus by a few pins.
From then on, Malta simply took off, first bowling an 857 to regain the lead, ensuring that both Turkey and Cyprus fell well behind.
The Maltese bowlers left their best for the final game, where they managed to roll an impressive 963 (240.75 average) to finish well ahead of Italy as they posted 5,010 pins against the Italians’ overall score of 4,811.
There was also another satisfactory result for Malta in the women’s All Events category when Frendo Duca secured another medal when taking bronze.
The Maltese bowlers will finish their commitments in Turkey when they will all be in action in the Masters event.
