The Corradino Sports Complex will be hosting the first edition of the Mediterranean Volleyball Tournament for U-18 sides, starting today.
Paola Volleyball Club are organising this tournament to provide more international experience for their players.
The idea to host this tournament was born following a series of meetings between Paola VC president, Dr Kenneth Vella and Giuseppe Balsano, president of the Sicily Region within the ACSI governing body. For this first edition, Paola Volleyball Club will be up against two other Sicilian clubs, namely, Siaz Polisportiva Armerina and Santa Barbara Sommatino.
Siaz Polisportiva Armerina won the U-18 Sicilian Cup, while Santa Barbara Sommatino went on to win the league championship of the same age group.
Joining these teams will also be Malta’s U-18 champions, Swieqi Phoenix, who will also have the opportunity to give more international experience to their players.
Paola VC president Vella thanked Giuseppe Balsano and his colleagues for their collaboration to organise this tournament.
“This tournament forms part of our club’s vision for the future, which will see our players being provided with international experience regularly,” Dr Vella said.
“This tournament is an added opportunity for our club’s nursery players, who in July travelled to Messina to take part in a training camp organised by Italian Serie A 2 side Akademia Sant Anna, with whom we have a collaboration agreement.
“It’s important to point out that this tournament also contributes to the sports tourism sector. This is because the Sicilian contingent will be formed by more than 50 people, who will have the opportunity to not just be present for the tournament but also visit places of interest around Malta.”
In a statement, Paola VC thanked Piscopo Transport Services, Maypole, Izibet, Dragonara Casino and Brasserie, Cool And Kiwi, Executive Security Services, De Paola Pharmacy, Marindex Trophies and Hands On Systems for their support for the tournament
