The National Cup, organised by the Malta Volleyball Association, got under way last weekend at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
The opening round saw three teams from the Super League proceed to the next stage of the competition.
In the first match, played on Saturday, Falcons breezed past Flyers 3-0.
The second match saw Malta champions Swieqi Phoenix Nium overcome the challenge of Mġarr 3-0.
Birkirkara also recorded a 3-0 win over Depiro, however, they needed to battle more than expected to take the opening sets.
In fact, Birkirkara won the first set 25-23 before edging the second 27-25.
In the third set, Birkirkara were in complete charge as they raced to a 25-13 victory to seal their place into the next round.

The competition will now resume next month when the semi-finals will be played.
Here, Falcons will be up against Swieqi Phoenix Nium while Birkirkara will be up against First Division side Paola Executive Security.
Also on Sunday, the Malta Volleyball Association organised a festival for children born in 2011. The event attracted a good number of participants from various clubs, a confirmation on how the sport is slowly growing in popularity in Malta.
